Correlations – Assignment 2
Read: Crandall, C. S., Eshleman, A., & O’Brien, L. (2002). Social norms and the expression of suppression of prejudice: The struggle for internalization, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 82, 259-378. http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/0022-3514.82.3.359
Then answer the following questions:
- What is the overall goal of this research (in 1 to 2 sentences—paraphrase and cite)?
- There are three main sections to this article as outlined by Crandall, Eshleman, and O’Brien (2002). What are they? (Hint: p. 362).
- See Figure 1 (page 36) and interpret by answering the following:
- a) State in words what it is representing and what they found (hint: discussing some methodology from Study 1 may be helpful here).
- b) What is the correlation coefficient? r = ____
- See Figure 3 (on page 367) and interpret by answering the following:
- a) State in words what it is representing (again discussing methodology may be helpful here).
- b) Overall, as the level of offensiveness and funniness increases does the normative appropriateness for prejudice also increase? What is the r for this? And is this is a significant effect?
- c) For normatively appropriate prejudice, what is the r with offensiveness and funniness? Is it significant? Interpret what this means.
- d) For normatively inappropriate prejudice, what is the r with offensiveness and funniness? Is it significant? Interpret what this means.
- e) What does this all mean? In other words, what does this tell us? Summarize and paraphrase.
- Below are three correlation matrices pertaining to Study 4 broken down by 1) all scores, 2) females, and 3) males by IMS and EMS scores. Please fill in the blanks indicating if a correlation is significant by placing an * by it. Then explain what this means in words.
- a) Overall
College Identification
IMS | r = |
EMS | r = |
*indicates significance at p < .05.
- b) Males
College Identification
IMS | r = |
EMS | r = |
*indicates significance at p < .05.
- c) Females
College Identification
IMS | r = |
EMS | r = |
*indicates significance at p < .05.
- See Table 5 (page 372). Generally, what does this table tell us? (Note: You should explain “SPS” and “Concern” a bit here).
- Summarize the goals and methods of Study 7.
- For each of the 12 correlations represented in Table 7 (page 375) explain the relationship (i.e., interpret what they mean).
