TPSYCH 309: Fundamentals of Psychological Research II

Professor: Amanda Sesko

Instructions: Your report should be about 2-3ish pages (of your text; use the amount of space you need to answer each question while being concise and clear, 12 pt font, Times New Roman, 1 inch margins). Please turn in your report to Canvas.

The study: In class we discussed conducting a study in which we investigate further glass cliff effects overtime. Specifically, past research has shown that when a company is in crisis, women tend to be chosen for leadership positions over men (Ryan & Haslam, 2005; for a review see Bruckmüller, Ryan, Rink, & Haslam, 2014). In part research suggests this likely due to stereotype fit—females are thought to possess traits that are needed in times of crisis that men are stereotyped to lack (e.g., Bruckmüller & Branscombe, 2010; Gratzia, Ryan, Bulluerka, & Aritzeta., 2012; Rink, Ryan, & Stoker, 2013; Ryan, Haslam, Hersby, & Bongiorno, 2011). In addition, this effect has shown to be most evident when the history of leadership has been male and not female suggesting it also may be a “signal of change” (Bruckmüller & Branscombe, 2010).

Our general question? Who gets picked if a female leader leaves and the company is still in crisis? A female again? Or a male? And does the history of leadership before she was hired matter?

Part 1.

Read and summarize Bruckmüller and Branscombe (2010) focusing on 1) goals of each study, 2) the main methods, and 3) the results.

Part 2: Method for our course project

Given our discussion in class and the literature you have read thus far on the glass cliff, propose an experimental methodology for our course project. Summarize this methodology below focusing on what participants will go through, step-by-step, clearly indicating the IVs and DVs. Note: past research should guide the methodology. Cite where necessary and be mindful of our constraints (i.e., we can’t get access to real companies in the time we have—this will be an experimental study that we will conduct online).
